Quisqueya
The Dominican Republic is a country that occupies just over the eastern two-thirds of the island of La EspaƱola, in the Greater Antilles. Both by area and population, is the second largest Caribbean nation (after Cuba).

Often, dominicans call their country as Quisqueya, and is the most visited destination in the Caribbean, for its undoubted attractions that draw many travelers, mostly americans, canadians and europeans.

Saona Island
Saona is the largest of the islands adjacent to the Dominican Republic, part of the East National Park, a few miles off the southeast coast. Its shores are preserved almost untouched, and only two settlements of just 67 houses and 500 inhabitants who live by fishing.

The Saona was discovered by Christopher Columbus on his second voyage, and is of great tourist attraction for its natural beauty. You can book excursions from Bavaro to visit the island and the natural pools that around.



La Romana
Halfway between Punta Cana and capitol of country, Santo Domingo, is located La Romana, a Caribbean coastal town. It is a tourism hotspot, with a marina with lots of movement.

Samana
Samana is a small peninsula north of the island, famous for being near the coast where humpback whales come each year between February and
March to celebrate their mating ritual, traveling more than 4000 miles from the North Atlantic. Noted for its tourist importance the town of Las Terrenas,
from which it is easy to observe the behavior of whales. Nearby is the Los Haitises National Park, with the famous Lemon with the famous Limon waterfall, where
some scenes Jurassic Park were filmed, and it definitely is worth visiting. In Bavaro there are many local agencies that organize day trips to these places.



Puerto Plata
After Bavaro / Punta Cana, Puerto Plata is the second most important tourist destination in the Dominican Republic. It is situated on the northern coast of the island and is also very full of big all-inclusive resorts and hotels, as many areas of vacation rentals.

The city has a great malecon crowned by the Frotress of San Felipe built shortly after Christopher Columbus.

Similarly, along the coast toward Haiti, could reach the ruins of Fort Christmas that Columbus built the December 25, 1492 with the remains of the Santa Maria.

Another attraction of Puerto Plata is the cable railway, that takes you to the top of a nearby mountain dominated by the statue of Christ the Redeemer of more than 10 meters high, and from which it is possible to see all the bay. No doubt this is one of the excursions that must be present on the agenda of any tourist coming to Puerto Plata.



Barahona
On the southwest coast and near the southern border of Haiti, Barahona is possibly less touristy area of the Dominican Republic. However, also has its attractions for many adventurers.

It is an area rich for their sugar and coffee plantations, while the city, to 204 km from Santo Domingo, is noted for its rich architectural.

It is famously known its magnetic pole, a hill that say that if you leave a vehicle in neutral, it tends to rise rather than fall due to the magnetism of its top. Nevertheless, this is just a peculiar optical effect motivated by unusual tilting of the adjacent vegetation.



Santiago
In the interior of the island, to 155 km from Santo Domingo, Santiago de los Caballeros, or simply Santiago, is the second largest city after the capitol, with 550.000 inhabitants. It was founded in 1495 during the first Spanish settlement after the discovery of America a few years earlier.

This city is known for its shopping centers, and also offer rides in carriages of horses from which to see the most interesting part of the city, and traditionally are parked waiting for tourists near the Columbus Park.

Stresses the Restoration Heroes Monument, became the symbol of the city, a tower of 70 meters high which is accessible climbing 365 steps that exist inside the building, and from where you can see the whole city.

Many buildings in the city are known for its architectural originality, making it one of the most interesting cities to visit in the Caribbean.



Santo Domingo
The capitol of the nation, Santo Domingo de Guzman, or simply Santo Domingo, was founded in 1496 by Bartholomew Columbus, brother of the discoverer of the New World, with 3,000,000 inhabitants, was the first seat of the Spanish government overseas. As you would imagine, a city of this size and with so much history behind the back has many interesting places to visit.

Nestled on the shores of the Caribbean, at the mouth of the Ozama river, curiously has no beach. Nevertheless, the great malecon runs much of the coastline of the city, and from the obelisk and westbound, you can find plenty of hotels, the majority of 5 stars, casinos, discos and entertainment venues. It is possible to make ridins in carriages of horses around the malecon, an avenue that is the main stage of the carnival.

The area called colonial zone, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, is the oldest part of the city, is the oldest part of the city, where are the most important monuments such as the Columbus Alcazar, the Royal Houses Museum, and the Fatherland Altar.

The most emblematic places of Santo Domingo include El Conde Street, Primate Cathedral of America and the Columbus Lighthouse Mausoleum.
